A little about the painting: Stanfield invites the viewer to interpret this painting any way they feel. Everyone that viewed this in the studio had different ideas about “the cross” what it meant to them and so forth, “ so I leave this one to the viewer” to quote the artist “It has generated some interesting and conflicted conversations”, he went on to tell me. This piece hung in Stanfield’s personal studio reception room for a number of years and went into storage when he went off to “see the world” in the late ninety’s. Stanfield went on to admit that this particular piece was hard to part with as it is “a very provocative piece, in fact he told me “this is the piece that always generated the most comments ever in the studio, and I have turned down a number of serious offers for it. It is still hard to let it go”.
