This is a seed pod for a tree that I found outside. While, yes, they are spiky and dark, they're must less menacing in real life. But when they are shot up-close like this, they turn into this alien like, almost scary thing that looks ready to attack!!! I'm sure they look this way to keep animals from eating them.
