In order to hide from his suspicious wife, Hera, Zeus comes down to earth as a cloud and seduces the nymph, Io. Hera comes down to see Zeus loitering with a white heifer beside him, which was actually Io in disguise. This painting highlights these interactions as Io, with the head of the white heifer she is soon to become, is in the arms of Zeus, disguised as a fantastical cloud.
