Some time before 1390, Herbert de Cumba’s title as Lord of the manor of Shittlestor (now Sheepstor), was inherited by his relatives, the Scudamors family.
John Scudamore, born 1433 had only two daughters and one of these, Johanna married John Elford, the Manorial title passing through her to the Elford family. The family is still remembered in the name of nearby Yelverton (formerly ‘Ye Elford Town’)
The Elfords continued to live here until 1748. Longstone then became a farm.
When the dam was being built in 1895, the farm was abandoned, and to save on the rates the roof was removed.
