Acrylic, spray paint and metallic paint on linen, 40x40x4cm (01/2013)

For the past few nights I have been disturbed by a fox calling at 2am in the morning around my ground floor flat. It was making the most eerie noise, so I looked out the window to see rather a magnificent specimin jumping up on to the partition wall.... then he became locked into my mind and therefore become my next piece!

In this piece I have tried to embody some of the myths and folklore behind the fox, both seen as a noble messenger and a trickster. The red in the fox is representative of a solar emblem, and the fox itself stands for passion, desire, intensity and expression symbolically....The fox's fiery coat and glowing amber eyes give it a volitile appearance, embodying the elusive and transformative qualities of fire itself. The Inca's call the fox 'Son of the Earth', due to it's ability to hear through the earth about far-off events, made him a 'diviner-curer', and in Shamanism the fox guided people through paths not visable or open to humans. In Japanese and Chinese folklore he is seen as the 'most subtle of all beasts' that has an uncanny spiritual force likened to thunder and echoes, and the fox has been poetically refered to by the Japanese as 'sunlight flashing amidst rain' which suddenly dazzles us, then dissappears – like the fox itself.... I have used gold and violet to depict the animal as these are colours often used in Roman Catholic Iconography. And have called the piece 'Fire fox' due to it's connection to fire and due to the fact the most recent symbol/icon I can find of the fox being 'Mozilla Fire Fox', a web browser on my PC...;)
