Made popular by the recent, and dare I say it, EPIC edition to the Disney Fairytales; Rapunzel wasn't always so popular.
In the original story Rapunzel was no princess. She was not but the daughter of a peasant family. When her mother was pregnant she craved salads made with a plant called Rapunzel. Because of this she bullied her husband to climb over the wall that separated their land from their neighbor's who happened to be a witch and they knew this.
Once the Witch did not bother with scolding them, twice she grew angry, and thrice she confronted the poor bullied husband.
When he pleaded for mercy she offered him a deal. He could take all the Rapunzel he wished but she would come for something in return one day.
She did, nine months later and whisked the child off to a tower with no door.
The boy who climbed Rapunzel's hair? Flynn rider? No... A young Prince. who slayed the witch and rescued Rapunzel, making her his bride and thus becoming the princess everyone now knows her to be.
