Part of a 4 page dream sequence at the start of my comic Dream Life - http://dl.salgoodsam.com/ - The sequence is meant to suggest a comparison between life on earth in general, in the wake of a colossal sustained fusion explosion, and life we perceive living in peril in extreme environments.
Up top, The Pompeii Worm, Alvinella pompejana. It's habitat is on or near Black Smokers, hydrothermal vents on the sea floor. Nestled within its tube, its body stays at a very toasty 175º F, while its plume-like head protrudes from the tube into water that is a much more temperate 72º F. Its fleecy looking coat is a colony of bacteria living in symbiosis with the worm.
