Champagne bubbles crisscrossing a dark water matrix
shaking hands holding them in place
a rush of excitement peppers exhaustion
the television screen burns a hole in the retina
as the left corner clock throws aside last minute farewells

Cocktail sequins accent pale bodies
half asleep
black puddles scattered upon chess board floor tiles
almost all mostly still
the heads - blond and cherry lolipop circles
youth fast disintegrating as the clock shed each minute

Clock hands at eleven fifty eight
heart beats held like interrupted phone calls
each movement of time freed a prisoner
and sentenced a memory to death
clock hands at eleven fifty nine
anticipation rattling fear's cage
another second thrown into a shameless flame

Syrup the colour of dragon fruit skin ran down two knuckles
polish from a three quarters eaten away finger nail
her bones rattle
as her sequins become mirrors
reflecting the flaws she tried to hide with powder
they called them love handles
though she didn't love them at all
standing there
wishing for a fresh start
and a reason to change herself

A rushed sigh whispered sudden grief
the new hour rang in a new year
voices like megaphone projectiles echoing
suddenly a cork topper flew above the crowd
into a five tier cake
she celebrates

Multicolour bombs shot between stars
explosions shifting in hue for anyone's blind interpretation
there was chanting
exhaled off sweaty lips
as each square of an old calendar
burst open into theatrical retellings of late and untold appointments
three dimensional stories overlapping each other
melting into caramel tears

The resolution jumps forward
that infamous snickering little thing
a half deformed insult
self inflicted
denouncing all that is for what should be
preying upon lonely minds
when desires become an obsession
and a cracked open bleeding skull on a clean slate
isn't that what she wanted?

Innocent are the victims
catching glimpses of fantasy perfection
through binoculars at a distance
there it is laying on an already exhausted breast
the heart desensitized from the veins
that infamous snickering little thing
drowning the self unsatisfied
in their own blood and sweat

Her sequins slip
on the treadmill that was a Christmas present
when the party's over
and the future looks more blurred than resplendent
spit gurgled upwards like a fountain
carbonated disease
spills over a still born dream
shoulders unable to balance the overattentive ears
and a complacent whining brain

Teardrops hammer her chest
sweat circles tantalizing nipples dropping down into a sack
hiding carbohydrates
several billion protruding
and two infant lions growling for food
drumsticks outstretched
seasoned with a black sprinkling
of freckles and hair follicles
they throw themselves over a continuous rubber wheel
they shuffle stances
vagrant toes wiggling
trying to escape
questioning their own motivation

For the love of over stressed standards -
damned was reality
the resolution retreats
that snickering little thing
from optimistic determined wishing
to crying and giving up
coming down the playground slide
like a lump in the throat
with a hangover and a headache

She gains three pounds
in depression and ice cream
curled up on the floor
the new calendar tacked to the wall above
like a religious icon or a noose
and as she cried
the resolution hibernates
waiting for the next end of year midnight strike

Hi Alexandra. Just wanted to say that I really love your work series. There are so many details to explore and stories to read that I would just like to sit down one day and get myself into this marvellous see of creative. Hugs.

Thank you so much for those beautiful words of encouragement Nikola. As you can tell I love telling stores...even if there isn't something written beside one of my portraits I like to think the eyes says something all by themselves too. Cheers!

You're welcome. I've always believed that stories can create nice atmospheres when accompanying our artworks.

Yes, I believe the same. :)
