The Persian Immortals were given the title of 'immortal' because of their miraculous recovery tactics. When one soldier would fall in battle, another would immediately take his place. Sharp, close range weapons were favoured by the Persians, forcing them to get close to their enemy in combat. This allowed them to get close enough to play an eternal cat and mouse game with their favourite enemy, the Spartans.
