A couple of years ago, when I last moved, we had this very large tree that we eventually came to understand was rotten. Knocking on it produced a hallow sound, and it was close to the house, so we had it cut down. This is a photo of one of the logs, showing just how hallowed out the center of the tree had been. Not sure if this was caused by bugs or water/rot (probably both), but whatever it was this tree could have easily come down during a bad storm.
