Spirit of Tasmania I (seen here) and Spirit of Tasmania II were built in 1998 by Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Finland. They have a displacement weight of almost 30,000 tonnes and a length of 194.3 metres. Stretched end-to-end, the vehicle lanes on each ship would be almost two kilometres long! The trip on board Spirit of Tasmania takes approximately 9-11 hours.

Spirit of Tasmania I and Spirit of Tasmania II cross Bass Strait at a cruising speed of 27 knots which is the equivalent of 50 kilometres per hour. The 429 kilometre voyage across Bass Strait is roughly twice the distance by road between Devonport and Strahan, on Tasmania's west coast.

The Spirit crosses one of the roughest seas in the world. In 2005 during a night crossing it was smashed by 20 metre high waves causing cabin windows to smash, water to enter the 9th storey cabins & disruption to the internal intercom system. The ship returned to Melbourne without any major injuries to passengers/crew & sailed back to Tasmania the following day!
