@ Ewan, of course - it is achieved through manipulation through code. I use opensource for a lot of my work, but sometimes processing. You can find a lot of code out there to achieve these kind of effects. I am no code expert but if you play around with it for a few months you will pick up the basics :)

Download processing and play around with it, with your developer background you should pick it up pretty quick....
