Species: The Royal Bengal Tiger (Carnivora > Felidae > Panthera > Tigris Tigris)

In Asian folklore, the largest living cat is endowed with magical properties and is portrayed as regal. Powerful and stealthy, the king of cats is much feared by animals and humans alike. It has the classic orange and black coat, patrols its own territory and with its immense strength, can bring down animals much larger than itself.
Once common throughout Asia, it is now restricted to small areas of India and the surrounding countries. The tiger's imagined healing properties still drive poaching and use of its parts in traditional medicine. These threats, together with the destruction of its habitat, decline in its prey and human population pressure, have all seriously endangered the tiger.
