This painting originated as two separate photographs I took in the French Quarter district of New Orleans, LA while on a trip there in March 2010. In one photograph, there was this very unusual-looking street guitarist, with a massive pair of bull horns strapped to the front of his motorcycle. He was parked right in the street, playing some blues jams on a beat-up old acoustic-electric guitar, looking like a character you might find in a Tom Waits song. In another photo, there was this beautiful, quintessential French Quarter building with an arcade of green doors and hard, late-afternoon sunlight. The two photographs were each going to be their own, separate paintings, but were eventually compounded into one image. I attempted to give the painting a purposefully-unfinished look, which represents the man’s mysterious and enigmatic nature. The style, coloring, and lighting of the image were inspired by the work of Edward Hopper.
