Ikat involves a very complex process of resist-dyeing of threads that are patterned before weaving. The dyeing process itself used to be a long process that took several days, sometimes even months, to make dyes from plants. It has been made easier with the acceptance of chemical dyes, but the richness of colors that comes from natural dyes is lost. Some places in India still make use of the traditional dyeing process. Precision is the key in weaving a perfect pattern on a small piece, as the pre-dyed sections of yarn have to appear at the right place. Simplicity of pattern may not give the idea of complexity involved in weaving, but it's beauty is still unparalleled.
