The Red Moon

DESCRIPTION

Collect your choice of gallery quality Giclée, or fine art prints custom trimmed by hand in a variety of sizes with a white border for framing.

This Illustration is inspired by the Lunar Eclipse of June 15th, 2011. The total eclipse lasted for about 100 minutes. As the Sunlight got filtered through Earth's atmosphere, blue and green light (with shorter wavelengths) got scattered away, and only red (with longer wavelength) could reach the surface of the Moon. The result was a beautiful, glowing, deep red/orange color Moon during this event. It was very spectacular, visible only from certain parts of the Earth! People lucky enough to be there, watched it in childlike wonder.

Sometimes, even when there's no eclipse, the moon appears orange or yellow color near the horizon. Scientific reason is the same... scattering of the light through Earth's atmosphere. Spiritually though, according to Mayan Astrology, symbolic meaning of the Red Moon is Self-Remembrance and awareness of your deeper connection with The Cosmic Consciousness.

Whatever the reason or meaning behind this phenomenon, no one can stay untouched by the awe-inspiring beauty of such natural wonder!

I watched the eclipse and it was really weird/beautiful!
It helps you realize that it's a sphere "floating" out there in this big space...

This really is very cool! Great composition. It has a subtle use of nostalgia and loneliness which haunts the viewer...

I spent some quality time with that lunar eclipse, and tried to photograph it. Your illustration is as beautiful as the event itself, and just as haunting.
Deepti Munshaw commented on June 23, 2011 7:03pm
Thanks Eyejacker and Geoffrey!! :) Since I watched it online, I took some screen shots of the moon during the eclipse. I created this whole art in Illustrator using gradient mesh, then brushed up a li'l bit in photoshop. Glad that you liked the illustration! :)

Awesome work, Deepti!! I wanted to see it too, but I couldn't see anything at all thanks to the smoggy skies of Gurgaon.
Deepti Munshaw commented on June 24, 2011 3:24pm
That's so sad Sree! Delhi & Gurgaon have too much pollution..... I thought it's under control now but apparently not! :(
