This design is a metaphor for the journey my dad took to the west from Taiwan when he was a young man, leaving behind his family and culture to pursue a dream. In a larger sense it represents the journey we all take in life, choosing different paths that lead us to sometimes unexpected places.

The character of the sage was modeled after a photo I took of my dad on a recent visit to Taiwan where he is now retired, living in the countryside. Most of the actual drawing was also done while in Taiwan, just after the Chinese New Year in 2010. The title is taken from a classic Chinese adventure tale of the same name. I thought it would be apt considering the theme and also because it was one of my dad's favourite books as a child.
