Genevieve Blais creates cinematically inspired narratives, attempting to isolate moments of tension within a single image. Inspired by the likes of Lynch and Hitchcock, her images focus on dark and macabre themes within an eerily beautiful aesthetic. She plays many roles in her practice; director, storyteller, costume designer and production manager.

By working within historically based tropes, she attempts to never ground her photographs in the present-tense, but create a familiar scene that resonates within the collective image-repertoire. Part historian, part amateur psychoanalyst, her work primarily deals with conventional representations of women, particularly correlations between sex and death.

She studied photography at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, and currently lives and works in Toronto.
