Ventriloquism was first and example of religious practice. Ventriloquism comes from the latin term, "speak from the stomach", meaning the strange sounds coming from your belly were actually believed to be voices of the dead. Come the middle ages, the term lost its meaning as it was referred to as witchcraft. With the spiritualism of the practice lost, the art of Ventriloquism soon turned into a stage show of magic and escapology.

In the mid 20th century, Edgar Bergen made Ventriloquism a mainstream treat. Edgar and his wooden pet, Charlie McCarthy, introduced the world to the idea of comedic Ventriloquists.
