The majority of Australians are only subjected to news on asylum seekers when there is discussion on the issue in Parliament and media reports of boat sightings. We aren’t informed about the war-torn countries from where these people have fled and the many years it has taken to escape. Asylum seekers and refugees are dehumanised by the media—labelled boat people, illegals and queue jumpers when they haven’t committed a criminal offence; sent to detention centres to be processed as if they were serving time in prison. Their actions are a resort of desperation, there is nothing left to live for except the hope of being in a better country.
