Inspired by the story of 12-year old Mary who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in November 2012, had to undergo countless chemo therapy sessions, and had to have her right leg amputated. (The hat you see Mary wearing in my collage is the actual hat Mary wore in the first photo I saw of her :-)

I commented before reading the background story. Before I went to medical school I worked as a nursing assistant in a large university hospital in the Midwest. The very first patient I met was a 20-year-old man who had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his teens. Meeting him made a lasting impression. You've created a touching piece of art inspired by your young friend.

Very moving, beautiful work!
Judith Clay commented on June 10, 2013 8:23am
Thank you so much, Geoffrey, for your thoughtful comment and for sharing your experience. I did some research on osteosarcoma, and read that they're is a 60-80% chance of recovery. So I do hope that Mary gets to live on to the age of 20 like the patient you mentioned, and much, much longer.
Judith Clay commented on June 10, 2013 8:24am
Thank you, farah and Angelo, for your kind comments.

I just read the story which makes it even more touching. I love the hat!
Judith Clay commented on June 10, 2013 10:34pm
Thank you, dear Jacqueline, Pegeen, Catherine, and Eric, for all these warm and kind comments. They really mean a lot. Yes, Eric, I love the hat, too. It was so important from the beginning. I saw the photo of Mary with that hat (she wears hats, of course, because she lost all her hair due to the chemo therapy), and realized that, although she has to deal with such serious issues at such a young age, she is still just a little girl!

Very beautiful Judith!!. One of my sons had Leukemia when he was just 3 years old. It always amazed me how brave all the children were we met at the hospital. I hope Mary has the same happy ending as my son Dillon (who is now celebrating his 14th birthday this weekend) xxx
Judith Clay commented on June 11, 2013 8:18am
Thank you very, very much, Anna! Love your comment!
Judith Clay commented on June 11, 2013 8:25am
Dear Sharon, thank you for sharing your experience. I am sure it was a very trying time for your family, and I am truly happy that there was a happy end for your son! I sometimes think that children are braver than adults, because they're not burdened with negative life experiences yet. I hope you'll have a great day celebrating your son's birthday this weekend :-)
Sharon Johnstone commented on June 11, 2013 8:31am
Yes I think children are definately braver. I remember there was always smiles and many still found the energy to play and have fun. Very inspiring. xx
