I have to admit that I am hesitant sometimes to write about your portraiture, for fear of over-analysis. But there is an arresting quality in the gaze of your subjects that is simultaneously unsettling and universally recognizable as deeply human. Setting aside for a moment your obvious technical skills, your work is some of the most compassionate I have seen produced by contemporary painters.

No, not exactly. "Compassionate"= Concern or sympathy for others.
