The Watch Tower, Waterford City, Ireland

by Illograph

Stretched Canvas

DESCRIPTION

Fine art print on bright white, fine poly-cotton blend, matte canvas using latest generation Epson archival inks. Individually trimmed and hand stretched museum wrap over 1-1/2" deep wood stretcher bars. Includes wall hanging hardware.

This tower's cyndrical shape suggests that it dates from the 13th century. However, you will observe that the openings in the building are gun loops, as opposed to arrow loops, suggesting that if the tower dates from the 13th century, then its arrow loops were replaced in the 15th or 16th century to facilitate artillery. At the back of the tower you can see two entrances - one at ground level and a second at wall-walk level.

The absence of windows on the inner elevation of the tower suggests that it functioned exclusively as a defensive structure and was not intended to be occupied as a residence during peace time.
