Fancy Mantle on Black
by Liz Molnar
The mantle (szűr) is made cut straight lines and rectangular piece of baize. It was wore by sheperds for centuries. The mantle defended the sheperd from the cold, rain, wind, snow, shadows that lay against the sun. It was the pillow, blanket for him. However, the Fancy Mantle (Cifraszűr) has been counted on formal dresses. Peasant Lad will not marry since he doesn't attain Fancy Mantle. It's already an important role in courtship. When the suitor left the girl's house deliberately left his Fancy Mantle. Next day if it was in the house, he was welcomed back as a suitor, but if he found it hanging on the porch, he was rejected, that is "Exposed his Mantle" (Hungarian saying), did not welcome anymore as a suitor.
