Preserved today as a National Historic Landmark located in the San Francisco Bay is Alcatraz Island. Also known as The Rock, Alcatraz used to serve as a military fort and prison before it became the federal prison it is most known for. The island housed the country's most notorious criminals before shutting down in 1963 due to the high cost of upkeep and insufficient funding.
