Pip had never been so happy to see that crookedy little smoke stack. His day had been full of surprises. First Frog had upset his milk carton boat, which soaked him all through in the creek. Then crow flew off with his new overalls as they dried in a warm patch of sun. Old Tom chased him then: over hedges, through windows, even under Lady's skirt as she hung up the wash! And that was when Baby had made him her plaything. He'd said his goodbyes in his mind at that moment, her clutch like a vise on his soft downy feathers. But no! Baby cooed and crooned, whispered his name in a kiss. She dressed him, with fat toddler fingers, in overalls (his overalls!) that she' d found in the grass. She brushed him and fluffed him and gave him some tea. And when her nap time loomed near, simply toddled off with a giggle. Pip giggled right back! Then he raced like the wind through the yard, past the house, the hedges and creek. As he came through the wood and caught sight of his house, Pip jigged a happy (though very, very tired) little jig. Home sweet home.
