Bakst is probably best known for the wonderful costume and set designs he created for the emerging Ballets Russes company's ballet productions in Paris, London, throughout Europe and on tours to North and South America.
The main characteristics of Bakst's theater design were strong line and beautiful colors that fitted so well the exotic and flamboyant nature of the ballets - eg Cleopatra (1909), Scheherazade (1910), Narcisse (1911), and many others.
In 1922, Bakst visited the USA under the patronage of philanthropist Alice Warder Garrett.
