ABOUT THE ART
“For it is in giving that we receive.”
― St. Francis of Assisi
I love and admire my wife. As many of you may know, Cathy has been working with non-profit organizations to put books in the hands of our most disadvantaged children for longer than I’ve known her. I’m incredibly proud and inspired by the way she has made giving a central part of her life. If we all were more focused on how we could help others, using the skills and talents we’ve developed as a result of others helping us, the world would be a better place.
Just as all of our children need to be nourished with food in order to grow, having the ability to read and appreciate the arts and sciences is necessary to nurture the development of their minds. History shows us that the civilizations that prioritized the pursuit of knowledge and advanced our understanding of the world through the arts and sciences (in all of their forms), are the ancient cultures that continue to be remembered.
“Coloring Page For Literacy” was created to give back and be a collaborative piece in several ways. The contemporary art print, produced by deconstructing imagery from popular children’s books characters, was designed to be a coloring page for children that would inspire curiosity, motivate imagination, and emphasize the limitlessness of creative interpretation. I will be donating half of all profit from the sale of the print to purchase books for kids who need them via a non-profit organization focused on building children’s literacy through book distributions. Parents that purchase the print for their children to color can know that another parent’s kids will get the opportunity to read and learn as a result of their gift. The image will also be made available to community volunteers who might wish to use it as a source for a large scale mural painting in a children’s library or other kid-friendly space.
