ABOUT THE ART
This print is a visual abstraction of the 1995-96 Northwestern Wildcats season. Each square represents one game (the season progressing left to right, top to bottom). Its color is determined by proportionally mixing the two teams' colors according to the points they scored in the game. The more purple a cell is, the greater the margin of victory for NU.
The 1995-96 Northwestern Wildcats created a new era of football at NU. Led by Pat Fitzgerald, Darnell Autry, Steve Schnur, and Coach Gary Barnett, the Wildcats went 8-0 in the Big 10 and won the conference championship. The 'Cats put themselves on the national stage by upsetting Notre Dame in South Bend on opening day, followed by huge wins over Michigan and Penn State. While not the storybook ending, 'Cats fans descended on the Rose Bowl, vastly outnumbering USC fans, for one of the proudest moments in many alums' memories.
There is a special place in the hearts of NU students and alums for the 95-96 season, this print honors that point in time and the redefinition of success at Northwestern.
