portion of encaustic wax painting entitle 'Sedona'

This is an encaustic painting and collage. Encaustic paint is wax based and is applied hot (melted) to a prepared cradled wood surface. The wax is kept melted on a heated palette (griddle) and each layer of wax is fused to the underlying layers through use of a heat gun or iron. Each work is comprised of dozens of layers of wax.
According to R & F Paints website, the word ‘encaustic’ comes from the Greek word enkaiein, meaning to burn in, referring to the process of fusing the paint.

What I love about this medium is the spontaneity of the wax. It does not like to be controlled and making it work towards my vision is a bit of tenacity mixed with experience. I love how textural the pieces can become.
