ABOUT THE ART

This piece was inspired by events that took place in East Flatbush, Brooklyn the weekend of March 9th. That Saturday, Kimani 'Kiki' Gray, 16, was fatally shot by plain-clothes officers of the NYPD. Police contested that Gray had pointed a .38 calliber revolver at them, when they stopped him for questioning. The sole witness at the scene claims Kimani did not have a gun. That Monday, a vigil was held for Kimani, but it quickly boiled over into a violent riot.

This piece is not necessarily about Kimani, nor the shooting or riot in particular. It is about the tension between the urban "hoods" and the "powers that be", specfically the police: the distrust, the possible racial implications, and overall the "us vs. them" mentality from both sides.

To this day, the circumstances surrounding Kimani's death are hazy.
