The Murder in the Pines was a notorious murder committed in Beaufort County, NC in 1827. Caroline Wallis, a young girl, (age of 12) was stabbed and killed by prominent business man William Nash. The two had arranged to meet at their "Lover's Nest" near a watering hole now known as Big Bay, before eloping to the Outer Banks. It is rumored that Nash had grown jealous of Caroline's advances towards one of her classmates. A farmer clearing some land happened upon the scene, and seeing Nash cradling his bloodied, lifeless love, promptly placed his Johnston's axe into Nash's head.
