Oleander "Ol" Black Crow was a chemist born on December 29, 1800 near the banks of the Cape Fear River. During his early career, he identified the hereditary nature of the susceptibility to Avian Influenza. In 1834 he revealed the concept of Beaver's Law of the Rule of Tree. Also in the 1800s, he was the first chemist to explain the behavior of toxic and alkaloid plant substances, and found they could make effective artificial or ‘synthetic’ copies which could be used as potent drugs.

Crow died July 26, 1843 in Wilmington, NC, just three short years after he drove the last spike into the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad's 161-1/2 miles of track (At completion in 1840, this was the longest railroad in the world.) . Crow also published many articles on mathematics, astronomy and physics.
