In the 11th century the Viking Earl Hakon murdered his cousin, Earl Magnus (St. Magnus). As penance he undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. On his return he constructed this church at Orphir on West Mainland in the Orkney Islands. It was modelled upon the Church of the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem.
