Whiteout: collaboration details
We couldn't ignore our love for short-run art publications any longer. We're really looking forward to your contribution to "Whiteout", our first of what we hope will become a series of limited edition zines.

Whiteout is a condition of diffuse light in which visibility and contrast are severely reduced and there are no reference points at all, leaving the individual with a distorted orientation.

All you have to do is 'apply' for the collaboration, create your Whiteout inspired piece, and post it to your Studio for sale as an art print. We'll then curate both the contributions for the zine itself, as well as the accompanying collection that will later be featured in the Society6 Shop.

Some things to help you navigate this collaboration:

1. Please click the purple "apply" button for Whiteout, only if you at least intend to contribute.
2. Create your piece and post it to your Studio at anytime, but by no later than Friday, July 1 to be considered for the zine and the collection.
3. Please use the title of your work as the title of your post AND please use the word "WHITEOUT" in the description of your post (even if that is the entire description)
4. The pages of the zine will intentionally be printed black and white only. We will likely be using a natural color paper stock, not bright white. The final dimensions of the book will be approximately 5.5" x 8.5" (with some spreads available to accommodate works). Please keep these things in mind when creating your work!

You will be notified via email for inclusion in the zine, and separately via email if your piece is added to the collection.

More details to follow...enjoy.

Collaboration Closed on: June 10, 2011
We're looking for contributors to participate in our first ever, self-published, limited edition zine entitled "Whiteout". Please apply if you are interested! You will be notified upon acceptance into the project.

Lucas Scialabba :: Palitosci commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 1:27pm
should be unpublished works may be published or something that is already in the shop in Society6?
Justin Cooper commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 1:31pm
@Lucas, something unpublished is preferred, but as long as the work is relevant it can be an existing piece
Lucas Scialabba :: Palitosci commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 1:36pm
thanks you!
Isaac Bidwell commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 1:39pm
hey speaking of selfpublishing, i'm sending out your goodie this friday
Rachael Shankman commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 2:59pm
Ok my first submission is in. That was fun! Can't wait to make more.
eyejacker commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 3:17pm
Can we upload a piece of work which will be much bigger than the book's dimensions (but at the same ratio) so we can sell it as extra large in our shop? Do we need to accommodate for any bleed for when the book gets trimmed? Thanks!
Justin Cooper commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 3:31pm
@eyejacker, depending on the resolution, your original image may need to be larger than the book dimensions in order to sell it as a print. Don't worry about bleeds, we'll address that in production.
eyejacker commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 4:11pm
Thanks Justin!
Nick Volkert commented on Thursday, May 19, 2011 6:54pm

sounds cool. i will try and make time for this! :]
micheleficeli commented on Friday, May 20, 2011 2:17am
This is a great idea! I'll try to do something for this. Can we use any medium for this? Like photography, collage or such?
Carla Broekhuizen commented on Friday, May 20, 2011 2:57am
Nice, I added one of my price winning photo s.
Justin Cooper commented on Friday, May 20, 2011 8:18am
@ragnampiza, yes, any medium. Just please mind the black and white.
micheleficeli commented on Friday, May 20, 2011 12:09pm
Ok, thanks, Justin!
Ruth Bradley commented on Friday, May 20, 2011 2:09pm
can I submit more than one piece? I am tied between two...
Justin Cooper commented on Friday, May 20, 2011 2:13pm
@ruth, yes, as many as you'd like!

Marco Di Nicola commented on Sunday, May 22, 2011 8:48pm
Hi Justin, would like to know if i can submit a "full-on" black and white illustration... I'm asking because i've seen some of the ( very nice) submissions so far, and they're kind of grey-ish.
Here's a link so you can actually see what i'm talking about.

Thanks.
Justin Cooper commented on Monday, May 23, 2011 8:48am
@Marco, the image can be anything that you feel will work printed in black and white.
Marco Di Nicola commented on Monday, May 23, 2011 10:19pm
Thanks a lot, Justin.
Jesse Treece commented on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 1:56pm
Can there be a little bit of color in the piece as long as it prints well in black & white? Also, if I want to use a piece already in Society6 should I resubmit it or just change the description? Thanks!
Justin Cooper commented on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 3:11pm
@jesse, as long as it prints well in b&w no problem. You can just amend the title if using an existing post.
Jesse Treece commented on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 3:29pm
thanks justin!

Heather Goodwind commented on Thursday, May 26, 2011 11:51am
If it gets printed on natural paper in black and white, does that mean that anything white will be "natural" instead of white?
Justin Cooper commented on Thursday, May 26, 2011 4:07pm
@heather, yes, only black prints
Speakerine / Florent Bodart commented on Friday, May 27, 2011 2:06am
Must we put "Whiteout" in the title too??
Justin Cooper commented on Friday, May 27, 2011 9:26am
@speakerine, just please ensure that "Whiteout" is in the description of your post and you're set
Daniel Bobroff commented on Friday, May 27, 2011 9:31am
Excellent...needed something to get my teeth into. Will submit a piece I recently created and have others planned.
eyejacker commented on Sunday, May 29, 2011 2:09pm
Hi Justin, i was wondering if you want exclusivity for these designs, as they are meant to go to print. Will submitting a design to threadless as a t-shirt for example, jeopardize our chances of being chosen? Thanks!
LookOutBelow - Graeme V. commented on Sunday, May 29, 2011 7:05pm
Awesome!
Justin Cooper commented on Monday, May 30, 2011 8:59am
@eyejacker, no exclusivity required.

Randi Antonsen commented on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 7:08am
hi there, Justin! Is it possible to apply the collab with this series in my mixed media and collage studio posted 8 months ago: http://www.society6.com/studio/fables/loneliness
or is it to old? I perhaps have time to make new ones if they are :) best R
Justin Cooper commented on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 8:30am
@randi, we're trying to avoid any constraints here, so post anything you wish please
Randi Antonsen commented on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 9:20am
ok :) thanks!
Carl Floyd Medley III commented on Thursday, June 2, 2011 6:16pm
edited a post to include "whiteout" but it doesn't seem to show up when i do a "whiteout" search. problem? no big deal? question mark? (post here: http://www.society6.com/studio/carlfl...rs_Paradox)
Bonnie Durham commented on Friday, June 3, 2011 3:20pm
can i adjust the dimensions of my piece later if it gets picked?? i didn't make it that exact size for now. it will be easy to change.
Justin Cooper commented on Friday, June 3, 2011 5:00pm
@Bonnie, yes, no problem
Jonathan S. Dockal commented on Sunday, June 5, 2011 6:10pm
Sorry if this question has already been asked, but I still a little confused. So when we apply it's only to be looked at and be judged to see if you're eligible to be in the print? But we don't have to have the WHITEOUT piece till later?
-Thank you for your time.
Deepti Munshaw commented on Monday, June 6, 2011 3:33pm
Hi Justin, I submitted two images with 'Whiteout' in Title but don't see them when I search... let me know if there's a problem... Links:

Justin Cooper commented on Saturday, June 11, 2011 8:08pm
@Jonathan, we'll squeeze as much work into the zine as we can, if you feel more comfortable posting for sale later that is cool.
Justin Cooper commented on Monday, June 13, 2011 2:52pm
@Carl and @Deepti, we are constantly refining search. Should be showing-up for you in the next couple days and from now on. Thanks for your patience.

thanks Justin. It's all good. In the hood. And everywhere else that isn't in a hood area.

Donald Ely Illustrations commented on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 8:18pm
Justin, quick thing. I think that I did apply, so does that mean I can still work on the contribution that I planned on submitting?
Justin Cooper commented on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 10:05am
@donald, you bet
Kama Storie commented on Saturday, June 18, 2011 6:49am
Where is the purple 'apply' button???
Rachael Shankman commented on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 8:38pm
Hi Justin,

I have a quick question. I created a piece when you first announced this collaboration. I placed "whiteout" in the title, and the subject line, but I didn't see any instructions about a purple apply button in your original post, so I never clicked it. Does that mean I'm not included? Sorry but I didn't see anything about it until this post.
Justin Cooper commented on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 9:25am
@Rachael, no worries, I saw that all good
Rachael Shankman commented on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 11:46am
Ok whew! Thanks and sorry to add to the millions of questions coming your way!
Farnell commented on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 12:33pm
hi Justin, when will you decide which artworks has been selected for whiteout??
Justin Cooper commented on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 1:47pm
@Farnell, lots of people are still working on their contributions. We've asked that all of those be posted by Friday, July 1st. We'll begin editing the book shortly thereafter, so it will be just a bit still before we start contacting people.
Farnell commented on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 1:52pm
ahhh I see, cool. Cheers for the update.
