Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and the smallest of the planets, dwarfed even by some moons (Ganymede and Titan). It is similar to Earth's Moon Luna,in that it is airless, lifeless, and geologically inactive. At certain points in the Mercurian year an observer standing on the surface of the planet would see the sun rise, slow to a stand-still, then reverse its path backwards to set again. This is due to the fact that the planet's orbital and angular velocities approach each-other at these points making the sun
appear to hold position.
