Dr. Horrible
Dr. Horrible
For the first quarter I want to do a direct mailing of trading cards. Since I’ve been finishing up my Heroes and Villains for the 2012 Sketchbook Project I decided the first set of trading cards for the year should be villains.

I wanted to include villains that I didn’t include in my alphabet of noble villains (which will be premiering in the second half of the year). One of my all time favorite villains is Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible. In fact I may go so far as to say Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is my favorite Whedon work, and I’ a huge Buffy fan.

I did three sketches based on promotional photos and scenes from the webisodes. I nearly went with the scene where he’s a giant wreaking havoc on the LA because I thought it would make a dramatic trading card, but in the end I wanted to do something that would refer to the broader story.

I took his villain pose but threw the laundromat in the background instead of the lab to reference his alter ego Billy. One of the things I like so much about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is the juxtaposition of a supervillain on the kinds of mundane things we all do in every day life. It was also a nice way to represent Penny without trying to fit her in such a restricted amount of space since I’ll be printing these at business card size.
