Awesome work Wayne!
Wayne Edson Bryan commented on May 22, 2013 4:33pm
Thanks again everyone for your support of this series!

There's so much that I wanted to incorporate into this body of work: how some segments of the culture view art as primarily an accessory; our present day tendency of turning temporary trends and statistics into unfortunate hardened opinion; of appropriating not just the literal visual images that are considered banal (as Koons and Hirst do), but rather the banal processes and activities of digital age daily life (using the internet, filling out forms, how "likes" build demographic profiles, etc); of treating data like flung paint or halftones and blending the common handmade with the pixelated; of giving enriched focus on not just process, but to metaphor (through masked symbolism) without sacrificing the strengths of non-narrative formalist abstractness; to create work with a modesty of scale that conceptually can easily be translated into large sculptural installations and site-specific works; of returning/continuing to my previously created painting's diagrammatic aesthetic of transcribing experience, events beyond my control and raw data into somewhat unpredictable images that take advantage of the element of chance, as they also reference an intentional hieroglyphic (the feeling of theatrical story w/o the actual communication); of shedding light on the enfantilized rescue fantasies of a generation seeking both heroes and relevance through store-bought prestige; and finally, referencing my experience in consumer-driven Print On Demand Land and its Pinterest and Wanelo suburbs.

I'm now in the process of rewriting and editing my notes into a cohesive statement that I can use to explain the work to: curators, art dealers, collectors, and the folks who make the decisions who receives fellowships and/or grants from art foundations. When I have something close to a first draft, I'll pass it along with the desire of learning your thoughts about the presentation of my ideas.

(Also: I saw where you mentioned Vollis Simpson in a post somewhere here on S6. Did you know they're creating a whirlygig park in Wilson, NC? I take my kids to Whirlygig fest every year...it's fantastic. You'll have to visit!)

Wayne Edson Bryan commented on June 14, 2013 10:21am
Thanks so very much, Moni, Jessie, Lizzy, Michael, Christy, Katherine and Yasmina! I truly appreciate your courage and support!

I've been thinking a lot about originality and it's links to social interaction. Because people don't know how to relate to something new, they tend to respond to what they know. There's no risk looking like a social oddball when you like something that everybody else likes, no matter how mundane it might be. Having the courage to lead the pack and be original is a rare commodity, and ultimately it kind of feels like failure because being way out in front, you're all alone.

“When you're socially awkward, you're isolated more than usual, and when you're isolated more than usual, your creativity is less compromised by what has already been said and done. All your hope in life starts to depend on your craft, so you try to perfect it. One reason I stay isolated more than the average person is to keep my creativity as fierce as possible. Being the odd one out may have its temporary disadvantages, but more importantly, it has its permanent advantages.”

Bruce Stanfield commented on June 23, 2013 4:45pm
hehee, Had not seen any posts of late from you and deducted that you maybe working on another labor of Love? you know Wayne we often call our art our work, I kinda think of it as art something I enjoy as opposed to actual work? know what I mean?
Cheers!
Wayne Edson Bryan commented on June 23, 2013 5:59pm
It's actual work for me, Bruce. I enjoy it, it's rewarding, but it's not easy to do. There is a lot of thought and planning involved. That, in my opinion, makes it worthwhile, for me... know what I mean? I'm not spending as much time here as in the past because there is little to no real return in spending time here. I'm now seeing many real rewards from focusing my attention on the art gallery/museum crowding the real world, and kinda wish that I had figured out a year ago that the endless mouse clicking and this place leads to... well you know where it leads. I'll continue to support the folks that support me here when I can.
Bruce Stanfield commented on June 23, 2013 6:12pm
True Wayne, I worked it out once I think I get about 25cents an hour on my online clicking, but as you say the art gallery thing pays way more per piece and per year! I am concentrating on large scale "works" Murals and performance art events, usually linked to a fundraiser on benefit, although does not feel like work :)
Wayne Edson Bryan commented on June 23, 2013 6:35pm
I'm really glad (really) that you enjoy what you're doing. I'm working on getting another $50,000 grant to pay for the fabrication of large scale works to be exhibited in museums. That brings me a lot of satisfaction. I've already received several large grants and gotten a lot of attention as an artist that is doing something new. Personally, I need to be engaged and contribute to the larger conversation that is written about art history being made today. I thought, for a while, that I could contribute something here, but I know now that is not possible. Everybody wants to go where they are appreciated... I'm no different in that respect.
