It was well after the dawning of the moon when jealousy and greed stole themselves into my house and under my bed. i heard the shadows and saw the creaks but didn’t bother to trouble. i should have stopped them then and there. if only i had known how their giggles and whispers would keep me up at night. but jealousy and greed feasted and grew strong on “if only”s. and “what if”s, “why me”s, “why not me”s and, most of all, “i’m not good enough.” they gnawed on my bones, tugged out my eyes, and scratched at my ears, but worst of all they plucked you right out of my head. you were returned within a blink and with no fuss but i failed to realise, until it was too late, how they had disfigured and maimed you. gone was your sweet face, instead a snarling dog’s sneer. your floating hands were transformed into raven talons that clutched around my neck while your poisoned lips moaned that you never did, would or could love me. less! you never needed nor wanted me, never thought of nor desired me. and that is how, late one night, jealousy and greed beheaded me.
