“What makes a painting beautiful is the way the paint’s put on, but I don’t understand how women put on makeup. It gets on your lips, and it’s so heavy. Lipstick and makeup and powder and shadow creams. And jewelry. It’s all so heavy.”—Andy Warhol I am an artist based in Erie, Pennsylvania. My work engages with notions of femininity in popular culture and is based upon years of looking at women in the media. Although my work is interdisciplinary, my primary medium is drawing. I draw directly from photographs, often compiling a collection of source images as the basis for a single portrait. I gather fashion imagery, both contemporary and archival, culled from magazine editorials, style blogs, backstage shots of models in waiting before runway presentations, vintage “naughty” postcards, and publicity shots of film stars or showgirls. In addition to graphite, ink, and watercolour, my drawings often incorporate other materials that are overtly girly or sweet, including makeup, candy, glitter, and coloured sugar.
