A Tale of Two Pictures
A Tale of Two Pictures
The two pictures here are both for sale here on Society6, and both have recently passed 100 promotions (thanks to everyone who likes these pictures!). But there the similarity ends.

The top picture, "Early Morning in Amsterdam", is easily my best-selling image - it accounts for almost a full third of my total sales. The other picture, "Tall Trees", hasn't sold at all. Personally, I prefer it as a photo, but there's obviously something about the Amsterdam shot that resonates with buyers - travel has a powerful emotional pull, and this shot definitely seems to tap into that.

It would also seem that "popularity" of an image as voted on by the Society6 community doesn't always directly correlate with what people want to hang in their home.

very interesting and obvious tale, Cameron. I face this many times in my business, not everything I like buyers prefer, and not always our bestsellers products are my favourite. the question is do we create for ourselves or for selling. p.s. I prefer your "Tall Trees" and hope soon it will find his home to hang on wall :)))

Oh, I always create for myself, Armine. If I tried to second guess "what people want", photography wouldn't be much fun anymore for me.

I agree with the promotion vs sales thing. Peronally i would really like to have the bottom one on my wall. It´s a wonderfull picture.
