A Season to Share: Artist Community Celebration

This holiday season, we want to share all the unique celebrations and perspectives from our diverse, global artist community. The "A Season to Share: Design Challenge" is a commissioned art project to help showcase how the Society6 artist community celebrates the season, the traditions they share and the winter moments they love.

"As a Chinese-American immigrant, Lunar New Year has meant different things to me over time. Some of my earliest memories in China center around my family making and eating dumplings together on New Year’s Eve and welcoming the year with firecrackers and fireworks. Once my family moved to the United States, it was difficult to return to China for the holidays and Lunar New Year evolved into celebrating with family friends and other Chinese immigrants. Nowadays, I celebrate the Lunar New Year with friends by making dumplings and going out for Chinese food."

Jennifer is an illustrator currently living in Brooklyn, New York.

“At my house, everyone dresses up, even my father wears a tie! We have dinner at home and don’t go out but it’s a way to welcome the year as the best version of yourself. After dinner, when everyone around the country is waiting, we watch the clock in Puerta del Sol (Madrid) on TV so that we can eat 12 grapes at the same time as the bells ring. It has to be 12 lucky grapes, like the 12 months of the year and it’s important to have one for each clock strike.”

"I immigrated to the United States on my own almost 15 years ago so I don't have family or relatives geographically close. Every year around Christmas, my kind friends, also known as my chosen family, invite me to spend the holiday with them. In a way, I became a "Christmas nomad." Christmas to me not only means spending time with people I cherish, it also has become a curious time for me to peek into how my friends and their families celebrate the holiday. I hope one day I will get to celebrate Christmas with family of my own – that’s the theme and inspiration for the artwork I created."

"Kwanzaa is a celebration of culture and universal truths that transcend religious boundaries… During the week of celebration, families and communities come together to share a feast, honor the ancestors, affirm the bonds between them, and celebrate African and African American culture… This year I am celebrating Kujichagulia (koo–gee–cha–goo–LEE–yah), the principle of self-determination. This art piece represents our ability to define ourselves, create for ourselves, speak for ourselves, and the most importantly, love ourselves."

"My favorite thing about Hanukkah is making hundreds of latkes with my husband every year. I wash, peel, and prep the potatoes, he does the frying. It takes us hours, but it is a tradition I love to do and eat! A typical celebration for me during Hanukkah involves, of course, food! But also presents, playing dreidel games and eating chocolate gelt, lighting the menorah, and singing the blessings."

"My family and I immigrated to the US from South Africa, so we live far away from our family and have created our own traditions for holiday celebrations. We have a large circle of friends in our small town in the Berkshires and the fall and winter holidays are a time to celebrate our chosen family with warm and welcoming events in our Williamstown home, which was built in 1900. Big meals are followed by everyone dispersing to find a corner in which to curl up with a cat or dog and a good book. It is this comfort, the low pressure way we can be together without fuss or the need to perform, that I value most. The glory of shared introvert-social-rituals."

Lara Lee Meintjes is a South African and American painter currently living in rather wonderful Williamstown, Massachusetts. She has inky fingers and peculiar hair and is especially fond of painting flowers and sneaking wee tigers into paintings. Lara’s paintings are whimsical daydreams featuring places she would really like to hide out in with a great book, and still life works in which plants and flowers burst vibrantly from recycled peanut butter jars and classical museum pieces alike. Her work has been shown on four continents and counting.

"On Diwali, family and friends will come around to visit and as tradition we offer mithai (traditional Indian sweets) to welcome them. Sweets are a gesture of greeting family and friends with the joy of celebrating the festival. Since last Diwali I have moved out [of my family’s home], so I plan to decorate my house with candles and make my own Mithai. I’m not great in the kitchen so I won’t be attempting any of the lovely mithais from my illustration, but I’ve decided to make a very simple but very yummy coconut ladoo."

"Dia de los Muertos is a very powerful place and space where you can still connect with the people who are important in your life who have moved on to the next phase, whichever that might be…It’s more of a personal celebration as well – of being grateful to still be alive, but also to appreciate the ones who have been part of your life and have left something valuable in your journey, same as I can potentially do at the end of mine."
