Dayna Ellen

Dayna Ellen was born between the prairies and the mountains of Western Canada. She continues to reside in her home town, Calgary, with her husband Robert and cats, Winston + Charlie. She currently is completing her BFA in Fibre at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), graduating in Spring 2014. Ellen spends her days off fashion forecasting, reading historical non-fiction, striving for healthy community and dreaming of living on a self sustainable farm and gypsy travels. Ellen is challenged conceptually to rework the representation and signifiers of Christian art by drawing upon personal experiences and contemporary cultural sources that reduce exclusivity to outsiders. Naturally, this evokes existential questions surrounding identity, conflict, relationships and spirituality. Through the use of imagination in symbols and narrative, Ellen finds herself allowing fantasy to contextualize an inner struggle. This is achieved through illustration, textiles, and performance art. Her practice has a cyclical nature, with each medium informing the other. Instinctively, it always starts with a pencil. Maybe it comes naturally, being a love child of fantasy, spoon fed on Disney and Sailor Moon. Much of her work is invested in the idea of duality, with things being both beautiful and monstrous. Coming to terms with the monstrous is to understand that we live in a broken world. However, Christ is the redeemer of all things. The challenge is to understand the friction of duality and thrive within it. Similarly, feminist discourse paired together within fibre processes seems a natural way to communicate this friction, due to their parallel nature to exist within the tension of pushing boundaries and respecting traditional constructs. This extends into our contemporary material culture, combining new sincerity aesthetics with minimalist design in relation to landscape and spirituality.
