Dylan Humphreys

Dylan Humphreys is an emerging artist from British Columbia; having recently received his BFA from Emily Carr University where he transferred after also completing Capilano University's Studio Arts Program. Painting currently serves his passion for a warped sense of figuration and catharsis, and much of his work grapples with the notion of the individual as a consumer commodity. With this in mind, Humphreys' ideological allies are found in comics, cartoons and hip-hop. Some of his earliest inspirations include MAD Magazine, Spawn comics and Public Enemy. Through layering brief moments of these digested experiences and influences, Humphreys attempts to expand the vocabulary of his medium as opposed to confine it. “Cartoonish” is generally an accurate description in the formal attributes of his drawings or paintings, which are nostalgic to Modernist ideas of style and authenticity through personalization, perhaps out of a morbid fixation. Much of his painting builds upon experimental gesture that is inspired by the work of abstract-expressionist painters and their mythical personalities but with an emphasized focus on pop and social qualities.
