Kim Malm
In the dollhouse fossil and dolly series Kim Malm explores domesticity and the ambiguity present in suburban life.
Drawn heavily from beautifully arranged catalog interiors, the dollhouse fossil series creates domestic scenes that invite the viewer into these fantastic spaces. Based on childhood memories of arranging furniture in a dollhouse, these pieces are intricate and deeply layered. Each piece is hand stitched, rendering a needle and thread image on a layered background of collaged paint and paper.
The dolly series features a faceless dolly and her vacuum cleaner, posing in a variety of beautiful interior scenes. Dolly inspired poet Simone White to create a series of poems to give voice to the suburban creature. (CavanKerry Press 2008). Each dolly original is done in graphite with hand stitching.
Collaborating with poets, musicians and multimedia artists, Kim’s work has been published in several limited edition books and multimedia video. Her collaborative books (including The Halo, Born 2 Hunt, and The Bullet) are in the collections of Dartmouth and Lafayette College, and distributed by Vamp and Tramp Press.
Kim has an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and has taught art and design at Lafayette College, Lehigh University, and Cabrini College. Kim is also a freelance graphic designer, creating logos, brochures and print collateral for a variety of clients.
