Laureen Maschek

“You are a function of what the whole universe is doing in the same way that a wave is a function of what the whole ocean is doing.” -Alan Watts Laureen Maschek is a German-born contemporary artist, raised in Australia and currently based in Queensland. Her meticulously detailed pencil drawings examine the underlying intelligence of nature, exploring the interconnected design that runs through the universe in the macro and micro scale. After working in diverse artistic mediums including metal, clay and fiberglass sculpture, as well as painting in acrylics, her current work consists of intensely colored, intricate pencil drawings. Working with pencils allows each drawing to slowly evolve in an organic process mimicking the growth and change of nature itself, as well as referencing the detailed drawings of wildlife and nature books from the past. Maschek’s works are a visual study of phenomena at the intersection of nature, geometry, physics, and spirituality. Inspired by subjects including sacred geometry and Fibonacci spirals, she depicts not only the known aspects of nature, but also reveals the unseen, intuitive aspects of the universe. This holistic interpretation of nature expresses Maschek’s philosophy about the wholeness and unity of life. Raised in a creative family throughout childhood, Maschek received a degree in Visual Arts at Swinburne University in Prahran, and was later accepted into a Bachelor of Arts for Sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts. Throughout her arts education, she has also studied philosophy, politics and anthropology. Maschek has shown her work in locations around Australia since 1999.
