Matt Leece

Artist Statement: I'm interested in the linearity of the relationship between the existing structures of genre and our expectations of art. Through improvisation, composition, visual art, and poetry, I'm trying to understand how we internalize a piece of art and either accept it or reject it. As an improviser I use my medium, whether my guitar, a paint brush, text, etc., to express my most instant self. I look to expose the often shared outer sentiments felt by all of us—as a composer, I dig deeper and try to find small cores of truth, emotion, aesthetic and develop them using strophic, self-referential models. One constant which connects most aspects of my work is the use of hockets and heterophony to create a shared voice or narrative between multiple individual sources. I am also an avid practitioner and advocate of folk art mediums and through my work, hope to empower others to develop their own method of self-expression and become receptive to the self-expression of those around them. In the words of scientist-poet Eugene Palovcak, I want to "open the heart of the mind to song." mattleece.com Matt Leece joined Society6 on July 22, 2013
