ABOUT THE ART

Selection from series "Human Roots: Women, Power, and Magic in World Folklore." This series examines the portrayal of powerful women in folklore, especially how such women were branded as evil enchantresses and witches. When their tales are analyzed, one finds that they represent basic human qualities that are negative or fear-invoking.

A Slavic witch from the wilds, she is portrayed as a lone old hag who eats children and flies in a mortar and pestle. However, when one looks at her depictions, she represents the mysterious power that women have to give life. While she has no children herself, she is deeply connected to the land around her.
