ABOUT THE ART
This story would have been used to explain the existence of many different ethnicities and languages.
The Tower of Babel, according to the biblical narrative, was a tower built by the descendants of Noah after the flood, the tower would have been built to lead men to heaven, the abode of God... Yahweh, the Hebrew God appears "to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded" and seeing what they were doing, decided to confuse their tongues to prevent proceed with its construction.
The structure is usually associated with a ziggurat, temples ancient Babylonians, although the text does not make any religious association to tower.
Despite the Babylonian context of the story, there are no known reports of this fact in Babylonian mythology. There is, however, a similar story to the Tower of Babel in Sumerian mythology Enmerkar call and the Lord of Aratta, in which Enmerkar of Uruk builds a massive ziggurat in Eridu and the two rival gods, Enki and Enlil confuses the languages of all mankind.
