France's ban on Islamic face veils was hotly debated in the media two summers ago and it eventually was passed in October 2010. Women are allowed to wear the face veil, called a burka or niqab, in their homes, hotel rooms or mosques. they can even wear one in their car - as long as they aren't driving. But those who violate the law will be fined up to 150 euros or take lessons on French citizenship. Steeper fines apply to someone who forces an adult woman to wear a face veil - 30,000 euros - while forcing a minor to cover their face has fines up to 60,000 euros and two years in prison. The ban affected only a tiny minority of Muslims as they believe it is another religious hatred. The bill is worded in the hope of avoiding legal minefields. It is titled 'forbidding the Dissimulation of the Face in the Public Space', making to mention of 'woman' or 'evil'.
